Artificial Intelligence & SEO: FAQ
The llms.txt file is an emerging standard, similar to robots.txt, specifically designed to guide artificial intelligence agents (like ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity) in understanding your website.
AIs tend to hallucinate information (invent prices or features). An llms.txt file allows you to define a 'System Prompt' that forces AI to use only factual data and source your URLs.
robots.txt grants access permissions (right to read or not). llms.txt provides context and semantics (how to interpret what is read). Both are complementary.
It must be publicly accessible at the root of your domain, for example: https://your-site.com/llms.txt. It can be linked directly from your robots.txt.
Indirectly. AI optimization (GEO) better structures your data, which also benefits classic search engines. Google itself uses AI (AI Overviews) to generate its own summaries.
In the 'Constraints' section of your llms.txt, you can explicitly prevent AI from ingesting certain sections of your site, or require it to specify that access to certain resources is paid.
Update it with every major change to your offering (price change, strategic pivot, key new feature) to prevent AI from propagating outdated information.
